VMARS NETS
V.M.A.R.S.

The Vintage and Military Amateur Radio Society

Nets
AM activity in the UK can be found almost every day on frequencies between 3615 and 3625 kc/s.
The society holds a regular AM net on Saturday mornings as close as possible to 3615 kc/s.  The net controller will find a clear frequency and call from 0830 local time. Anyone is welcome to call in,  there is no requirement to be a member of the society or to be using vintage gear; all that is required is a genuine interest in using AM . A controlled net is held initially to allow exchanges of reports, and an informal net is held from around 0930 onwards.

The decision to hold the formal net on a lower frequency was taken as some members were having problems with 3625, which is an exact multiple of the TV timebase frequency.

The Society would like to ask participants not to tune up on the frequency when the net is in operation, even if you cannot hear anyone at the time.  The  Net Controllers will regularly offer 30 second "tuning and netting" calls, and allow gaps for stations to call in.

The station of regular Net Controller M0TCM operated from Thorpe Camp Museum by G4DDI.

The station presently consists of a T1509 transmitter and a choice of AR88, HRO-5T or R1475 receivers.  A fully functional 19 set is also available for emergency use.  Also visible in the picture is  a Pye FM10D Cambridge used to keep in touch with the locals on GB3FR, and a Heathkit modulation monitor to keep an eye on the T1509!

The reason for moving from 3625!

This bandscan is centred on 3625, the TV timebase noise clusters
can be easily seen.

SSB net
The society also runs an SSB net to encourage members to keep in touch on-air. This takes place on Friday evenings, starting at 19.30 and uses LSB on 3620kHz +/- QRM.

Special on-air events
From time to time, the Society runs special events, generally on the 40m, 60m and 80m bands, which specialise in use of vintage equipment or to commemorate some historic event with "wireless" connections. These are advertised to members in the Newsletter, and also on the Society’s website.

The SRS Nets
The Dutch Surplus Radio Society run AM and SSB nets for vintage enthusiasts, full details are on their website here
